Chapter 28

I WATCHED DANA’S expression as she started piecing together the mystery of the last name Hendricks. It made my stomach hurt to think that Cullen’s mom had run Denton.

Since there was nothing much I could do in my current state, with not being able to connect with the living, I thought maybe I could find out about Mrs. Hendricks. Was it true? Was the woman really Cullen’s mom?

When I left the classroom, they had just started working through the questions for their homework assignment. I wandered through the halls to the restricted section of the building and then used the stairwell to climb to the top floor. Not surprised, I found Miles Kensington in his office.

He had his desk phone wedged between his ear and a scrunched up shoulder and his fingers were poised over the keyboard.

“Right,” he said flatly. “I want it made clear that we are proceeding as planned.” He tapped on the keys for a few seconds before adding, “No, I do not intend on using the money our benefactor has so graciously given us poorly. I will put it to excellent use.”

As he spoke, I walked around the desk and peered over his shoulder. It looked like he was writing a letter. Upon closer inspection, it was clear he was making a case for the implementation of their new trials. Whatever that meant.

Then he nodded. “No, I have not forgotten about it. I have been sorting through the data Cassandra Hendricks gathered during her time there.”

I sucked in a quiet breath. Hendricks?

What were the odds he was referring to the same woman Sam had mentioned in the classroom downstairs?

“Once I figure out our course of action, we will be able to reopen the facility. But what she discovered is very interesting. I just want to make sure I am understanding it correctly before we make any rash decisions. I know how important the funding is.”

I leaned closer to the phone, trying to hear the person on the other end of the line. But all I could hear was a few words. The board of directors. And something about needing approval.

“No, I believe she was onto something about the violence they created in the test subjects.”

I had no idea what he was talking about. What violence? And why on earth would they create it?

“That’s the thing,” he said. “They needed to be controlled with ether. Nothing else worked. All the other solutions they tried made the subjects more violent.” He nodded his head as he stared out toward the east windows and leaned back in his chair.

I thought he was leaning back so far he was going to tip backward, but then he propped his fancy shoes on his desk.

“Exactly,” he said, nodding. “Cassandra discovered their thought patterns changed with each new injection. Some subjects, the ones we’ve
